Vinyl floor tile
Square vinyl tiles are pried up whole wherever they release cleanly, which keeps dust and broken pieces to a minimum.
Typical cost in Portland
Under the carpet or the newest vinyl, an older room can hide square tiles, black adhesive and a sheet floor or two. We test each of those layers, then lift whatever contains asbestos down to the subfloor. Tiles come up whole where they can, and every piece goes straight into a labeled bag.
Five days is the minimum gap between DEQ receiving a nonfriable notice and the first tile coming up. Because whole tile is nonfriable, the contractor needs a Construction Contractors Board license rather than DEQ abatement licensing. Floors in Portland, Milwaukie and Gladstone are on our list.

Black mastic gets a lab result of its own. If the adhesive is positive and the tile is not, or the other way round, the plan changes, so we want both answers before the first tile comes up.
Sheet flooring may have an asbestos backing. DEQ counts sheet vinyl as friable every time, so it needs a licensed abatement contractor.
Kitchens and baths can hold several floors in a stack. The lab reports each layer separately, so we know which layers can go out as ordinary debris and which can’t.
A few things are worth settling before the floor comes up.
Metro asks for the survey on pre-2004 remodel debris, so give your installer a copy.
A bare subfloor shows old leaks and soft spots. We point out what we see so your installer can price the repair.
Kitchens and baths are hard to do without. Tell us how long you can manage without the room, and we will set the order of work around that.
